UMIKA
Umika sighed looking at her new seat.
They always changed seating arrangement after every semestral break, but it was her first time sitting at the back of the room.
It was already hard to concentrate in front, as she was always tired because of work, and always feels sleepy.
But since she was in front before, she could urge herself to stay awake… now what will she do?
Umika heard a sighed behind her.
She looked around to see Chinen, her new seatmate. It looks like he wasn’t happy with being at the back either.
Umika gave him a smile and said, “Yoroshiku.”
Chinen smiled in surrender, and nodded. “Yoroshiku.”
CHINEN
Chinen was trying hard to concentrate. Why is it that from back there, the board felt sooo far away?
And it was as if it goes farther away as the clock ticked.
Their sensei’s voice was soft as well… It’s really hard to concentrate.
He looked around and saw that Yama-chan was actually already asleep. He sighed. He needs to concentrate. He didn’t want to be like Yama-chan.
“Chii… Chii…”
He looked at his side to see Umika with her hands holding both her eyes open.
He fought a chuckle. She looks so cute trying to fight off sleep.
“Pinch me please, Chii? I can’t hold on for much long.” Umika said placing her right hand beside Chii’s left.
“Pinch you??” Chinen said, surprised.
“Please? So I’ll be more awake…” Umika pleaded.
Chinen sighed and pinched Umika though he only gave it a little pressure.
“Chii, I didn’t feel that at all…”
“I don’t want to hurt you…” Chinen tried to say.
“You won’t hurt me.”
Chinen sighed once more and do as he was told. This time he nipped Umika’s hand. He saw her flinched, and inwardly he flinched as well.
“Thanks.” Umika said. “Want me to pinch you?”
Again, Chinen fought a chuckle.
“Yeah, sure.”
YABU
Your studying method for a test?
Before, I was always “concentrating on the lesson” but recently, the seating arrangement was changed and I’m sitting at the back now. Also, a close friend in class is sitting right next to me so I began ignoring the lessons (laugh). I have to change my mind set!
Yabu pondered, looking at the magazine in front of him.
There it was again.
Chinen always include his ‘friend’ in interviews.
But when he asked him who it was, he wouldn’t say so.
He was sure it was only one person though. Only that one 'friend.'
And he was sure both Yamada and Yuto knew who it was but neither of them would say anything as well.
What was going on? What’s the big deal, really?
RIMA
Rima heard Umika's twinkling laugh and reflexively looked at her back.
Surely Umika was laughing and besides her, Chinen-kun was pouting.
Umika notice her gaze and address her, still giggling a bit.
"Rima-chan, do you have candy?" she asked.
"Candy? Wait, I think I have some mints here." She said, opening her bag and looking for her candy.
She randomly gave Umika two.
"Thank you!" she chirped. "Yuri's tummy is growling." She said giggling more.
Rima just smiled in welcome but she didn't fail to notice.
''Yuri' huh?'
SHOUGO
Shougo was bored. It was their free period but everyone was busy doing their seatwork for math.
He glanced at Mirai beside him. She was finished as well of course, she was the reason he finished fast, but now Mirai was taking a nap. She must be tired with her new drama and all but still, Shougo wished she was awake so he could have someone to talk to.
He looked around. Everyone was hunched up in their works.
Yuto seems finished as well, though. He was chatting away with Suzuka. But they were way on the other side of the class so he couldn’t join them.
He looked more. It seems Chinen and Umika was finished as well. Both of them were silently staring outside. They were in serenity it seemed.
But then, Chinen started singing.
“Kagayaita no wa kagami demo taiyou demo nakute kimi da to kizuita toki kara”
It was perfect, of course. So with nothing better to do, Shougo placed his head on his hand and watched Chinen’s ‘live performance.’
“Ano namida gumu kumo no zutto ue ni wa hohoemu tsuki Love story mata hitotsu"
Shougo could see that Umika was watching him as well, a small smile planted on her lips. Chinen didn’t seem to notice though.
“Kizutsuita yume wa kinou no kanata e”
And suddenly, Umika started singing as well.
“Sora ni hibike ai no uta.”
Shougo saw Chinen smiled and together they sang the chorus with Umika’s tone a little higher than Chii’s.
“Omoide zutto zutto wasurenai sora futari ga hanarete itte mo
Konna suki na hito ni deau kisetsu nidoto nai
Hikatte motto saikou no Lady Kitto sotto omoi todoku
Shinjiru koto ga subete Love so sweet.”
Then both of them laughed. And then they continued with the song.
“Wow, they’re really enjoying themselves.” Mirai commented. It looks like the song woke her up.
Shougo could only nod.
SAAYA
Saaya yawned big.
It was just soo quiet and cold and dark and boring.
They were currently watching a documentary about embryo development for biology.
It was so boring, half the class were already asleep.
Saaya even saw their sensei yawn as well. But it didn’t seem he notice her classmate sleeping. They were all experts in fainting attention.
Kamiki-kun was facing the screen with his hand holding a pen as if he was jutting down notes. Yamada-kun was wearing glasses which reflect the screen so their sensei couldn’t see his eyes closed. Irie-kun was actually behind the pillar hiding and sleeping.
And then there was Umika hiding behind Chinen, dozing off as well.
She glanced back at them. She didn’t know they were that close.
And she meant literally close. Umika was actually leaning her head on Chinen’s back.
Saaya smiled and thought, ‘Awww…’
It doesn’t look comfortable for Chinen but he wasn’t moving as if afraid to disturb Umika’s sleep.
And this was Chii. Saaya couldn’t imagine Chii enduring discomfort for Nakajima-kun or Yamada-kun because it was always the other way around. It was always Chinen sitting on their lap or leaning his head on their shoulders.
Good thing it was dark and their CCTVs didn’t have night mode.
Because Saaya was sure, there was something in there.
RYUU
"Chii, what are you doing?" Ryuu asked over Chinen.
"Just copying my notes..." Chinen said distractedly.
"Why? Do you need two copies?" Ryuu asked perplexed. Ryuu knew Chinen always have complete notes. Both Yama-chan and Yuto always borrow his notes. And on top of that, after copying Chinen would look at the notes, complain about his handwriting and then write the whole page again.
"No... my seatmate missed some class. New drama." Chinen answered.
"Oh... someone I know?"
Chinen stopped writing for a while and then he answered,
"Nevermind that. It's just someone..."
NAKO
Nako could feel her heart beating fast.
She was starting to panic again. She was sure she would be called once more.
Why did their Chemistry teacher have to take a leave??? And why is their substitute teacher a terror?! Jeez!
There was a loud noise and Nako looked around to see that Umika had dropped her pencil case.
"Sorry..." she said to the class at large.
"Relax, Umika-chan." Saaya said from in front of Umika.
"I just can't take it Saaya-chan. My heart is pounding. He'll call me again, I'm sure of it." Umika said, clutching on her heart.
"I hate this!" Umika continued. "And Yuri's not here today! I'm more relax when he's here. Now I feel so alone! Why did he have to work today?!"
HAYATO
Hayato found himself dragging his table towards the back of the room.
Now that he thought about it, this has been their routine for a while now.
He really didn't know when it started, but now they always ate their lunch by Chinen's seat.
They also started eating with the girls because they do the same and drag their table towards Kawashima's seat.
Now even if they do eat in the cafeteria, it would still be together.
And in the middle of their big group, it would always be Chinen seating besides Kawashima.
MIRAI
It was their break time.
Mirai sat herself between Chinen and Umika. No reason, really. She just wanted to sit with Umika.
The three of them weren't doing anything. They were just silently sitting there. Mirai was listening to Yuto. He was near them, listening to music in his headphone and singing along 'Dash!!.'
Mirai was content though and just sat there.
But then suddenly, Chinen started singing, too. And with a different song, 'Dreams Come True.'
It was immediate headache.
And then Umika started singing too. 'Crossover' this time.
Mirai closed her eyes. What the hell?!
"Ugh!" she exclaimed and went back to her seat.
'Jeez! If they wanted me away, they can just say so!'
KEITO
"Chii, can you move a bit? You're lying on my jacket..." Keito said softly. They were currently in their van going to Nagoya for their tour. Chinen has fallen asleep after the first hour of their journey.
"Hmmm... What is it, Umika? Are you cold?" Chinen said but he didn't wake up.
Keito looked at Yuto who was sitting on his other side. Chinen had called him 'Umika' three times now.
Yuto knew what the look Keito gave him meant but he just shrugged.
"Kawashima Umika is our friend, she's sitting with Chii now so Chii probably just got used to it." he explained.
Keito just nodded but he didn't buy it.
'Got used to it'? Who would buy it, really?
Yamada had been with Chinen since Junior years, is always with him now in school, in work and even during their offs. But never did Chinen called anyone 'Yama-chan.'
YAMADA
Yamada sighed and took his seat.
He was called by their terror teacher and couldn't answer the question.
He was sure Chinen knew the answer though and he kept giving him signs to tell him. But Chinen ignored him because sensei's rule was, if someone was reciting, no one is allowed to coach him or her.
He really didn't expect that Chii would give him the answer but he had to try.
Sensei stopped talking again and looked at the whole class.
"What is the difference between enantiomers and diasteriomers?" he asked.
Yamada knew he was looking for someone to call again. He braced himself.
"Kawashima-kun." Their sensei called.
Yamada sighed, relieved that he wasn't called again.
He looked towards Umika's direction.
He blinked.
He rubbed his eyes.
He couldn't believe what he was seeing.
Chinen was coaching Umika!!!!
SUZUKA
Suzuka looked again.
Surely, Chinen was holding Umika's hand!
What was he doing? It was like he was massaging her hand.
Suzuka shook her head in amusement.
She had seen Chinen seized Umika's hand frequent. One time they were 'playing' thumb wrestling. One other time, Chinen was 'wondering' why Umika's hand was so soft. There was also the time when he was 'reading' Umika's fortune. He said he had learned 'palm-reading' from Takaki-kun.
So now it seems Chinen is 'massaging' Umika's 'sore' hand.
Really, these two...
YUTO
Yuto wasn't really surprised to see Chinen besides Umika during their field trip.
Since they have become seatmates, they became inseparable. Like now they're 'seatmates for life.'
During breaks, they're always eating side by side.
During gym class where they could seat anywhere, they are still side by side.
When they went to Disneyland, in every ride, they were still seated side by side.
So yeah, it's really no surprise now.
Yuto smiled at the two in front of him.
They would be graduating soon, so he wondered what will happen to the two then.
Yuto smirk. Everyone knew Chinen's competitiveness.
What Chinen wants, Chinen gets.
And if Chinen wants Umika as his 'seatmate', Umika shall be his seatmate.
No graduation or Johnny-san can stop that.
YU
Yu can't really believe him! What was his problem, really?
So what if she'll be seating with a boy now? It's just sitting side by side! It's not like they're getting married or something. She doesn't even like him like that!
And besides, he knew Morimoto-kun! He'd knew him since he was born!
"I'm calling your school! You can't sit with him or any guy for that matter!" Chinen roared.
Yu sighed, sometimes she really couldn't understand her father.
Chinen Umika was just laughing.
Yu sighed once more, sometimes she couldn't understand her mother either.
