-spoilers: they are in Camp Jupiter, not Camp Half-Blood. Camp Jupiter is a Camp for Roman demigods and legacies.

"I can't believe we're on guard duty again." Mami said as she threw a long branch to the woods for Jam to fetch.

"You know how it is." Kei said, not looking up from his book.

Mami just sighed. She was just bored. She knew why there is a need for guard duty. She had heard Reyna, their Praetor, drone on and on about being safe than sorry. She knew all that. But really, the knowledge doesn't fight off boredom. She'd even be more happy if there would be an attack, at least Jam would have enjoyed.

Jam, her hellhound had came back carrying with her, not the long branch she threw, but instead a small tree who she had just uprooted.

Jam dropped the small tree in front of her, and Mami pet the great hellhound. "Good girl." Mami cooed.

Mami picked up another long branch and threw it once more.

"You better stop that, or there would be no trees left here in Camp Jupiter." Kei said, still not turning away from his book.

"Why am I always paired up with you?" Mami mused aloud, ignoring Kei's previous comment.

"Probably because Jam loves me." Kei said offhandedly, flipping a page. Mami chuckled at this.

"Yeah, probably." Mami admitted. Jam isn't very fond of the other campers except Kei, oddly enough.
As Mami is a daughter of Pluto, Jam had taken to her from the very start. But Kei is a son of Minerva. She supposed it might simply because Kei likes dogs in general. Maybe Jam knows that.

"And probably because I have Jam with me, so there's a chance I wouldn't die of boredom, watching you study." Mami decided to add.

Finally, Kei looked at her with one brows raised. "And what's that supposed to mean?" He challenged, jokingly.

Mami sighed in exasperation. "'Can you not review while on guard duty?' is what I mean." Mami said simply.

"I have a test tomorrow." Kei said, eyes going back to his book. Kei was attending the university just down the camp. Mami never really knew much about Kei's family. She just know that he had grown up here with Lupa raising him.

"You don't need to study, you're the most intelligent guy I know." Mami pointed out. "And seeing as I know twenty-three other children and legacies of Minerva, that's saying something."

"Well, it's my way to relax." Kei shrugged. "I just need one more scan of the book."

Mami sighed, resigned. She had been friends with Kei since she joined camp. They were both in the third cohort, and he was the one who showed her around the camp during her first day. He had always been nerdy, as is the other children of Minerva, but he can also be fun to be around. Right now though, he isn't.

Sighing once more, Mami called on to Jam and gestured for the hellhound to lie down. Jam obeyed and lay just by the gates of the camp. Mami patted her on her head and took something from the ground by the gates. It was a guitar. She then sat by the hellhound's side, using the hellhound as a sort of sofa.

She started playing and the hellhound dropped her head, looking a bit sleepy.

Kei had looked up at that once more.

"You really like playing." He said, softly though clearly. "Is that to do with doors to the Underworld opening with music? Just like that Orpheus who was able to go to the underworld by playing music to the door but couldn't get his wife anyway because of his stupidity?" He asked.

Mami couldn't help but laugh. It was just like him to ask a question with the need of a reference  to history. And he also said all that in one  breath.

Kei raised a brow at her, which only made her laugh more. When she was finally calm, she answered his question.

"No. It's nothing like that." She said and then pause as if deciding if she should tell or not. Apparently deciding to tell him, she added. "I'm also a legacy of Apollo."

"Oh." He said. "I didn't know that."

Mami shrugged. "You were the first to ask. Besides, I only have the gift of music. It's not really important. It's not like Octavia's gift of prophecy."

"But that's still something." Kei said. "You're a demigod and a legacy. Wow."

Mami just smiled, not really knowing what else to say.

After another pause, he returned to his book and she returned to playing.

After a while, Kei had looked up again to Mami's laughter. It was to see the daughter of Pluto being bath with hellhound's slobber as Jam tries to groom her, it seems. Kei couldn't help but laugh as well.

Kei had closed his book at this and stood up.

Mami looked up hopeful. "Finished?"

"Not yet. But I'm getting jealous of you two." He said.

Mami let out another laugh. "Well, it is quite comfortable here." She said, slinging an arm around the hellhound's neck and hugging her, fondly.

She then turned back to Kei. "I can share jam with you." She said and she patted the space besides her.

Grinning, Kei made his way to them and sat besides Mami, leaning on Jam. It was comfortable, he have to admit. It was warm.

Kei once more, opened his book and realize he was on the last page. He read it quickly, as Mami started playing her guitar once more.

When he finished, he closed his eyes, feeling very content right just then.

Sighing he muttered, "We should guard more often."

"Yeah. It's nice." Mami said with a grin.

"Next time, let's bring a blanket and a picnic basket." Kei said, letting out a chuckle.

Mami laughed as well. "Sure, but no books, okay?"

"Deal."
