DISCLAIMER: PLOT NOT MINE

It was a cold evening.

A light sparked to life inside a small house.

Quick footsteps could be heard as Yamada Mirai moved down the stairs of their basement.

Mirai is the rare combination of beauty and innocence. She went over to the rack of wine bottles and inspected their labels. She took one and turned back towards the stairs.

But before she took one step up, she stopped. She turned back. It was a quiet and unsettling night. She was a bit uncomfortable.

She shook her head, silently telling herself she was being silly and then continued to ascend the stairs.

Yamada Mirai smiled as she saw the silhoutte of her husband. She took the blanket lying on the floor of their living room and handed it to Yamada Ryosuke.

"It's getting cold." she said.

"Thanks." Ryosuke said as he took the blanket.

"Wanna share?" he asked as he smirk teasingly. Mirai rolled her eyes but sat beside him nonetheless.

"Wine?" Mirai asked holding up the wine she took from their basement.

Ryosuke laughed, "What's the occasion?"

Mirai playfully hit Ryosuke. "This is a very important night for us. Finally someone is recognizing the sacrifices you made. That you have put everything second, including me, for those families they're talking about." she said.

"About time, huh?" Ryosuke said,"but why give me a piece of paper?" he said pointing at the Mahogany frame settled on top of their table.

Mirai hit him again. "You're so boastful!" she said, grinning.

Ryosuke laughed. "What?" he said trying to sound indignant.

Mirai ignored him and clears her throat. She leaned forward her seat and read the certificate out loud as Ryosuke tries to tickle her.

"In recognition for his outstanding achievement in the field of child psychology, his dedication to his work, and his continuing efforts to improve the quality of life for countless children and their families, the City of Tokyo proudly bestows upon its son Dr. Ryosuke Yamada... That's you... the Mayor's Citation for Professional Excellence." she read and the two of them stayed silent for a while.

"They called you their son. Wow." she giggled.

Ryosuke tickled her and their laughters filled the house. They talked and drank enjoying their night together.

After a while, Mirai stood up and straighten herself.

"It's getting late, let's call it a night." she said.

Ryosuke smiled at her and nodded.

They went to their room, Ryosuke first and Mirai following closely behind.

Ryosuke opened their door and clicked on the light's switch. It didn't come on. Ryosuke tried again, but nothing happened.

"Bulb's out." Ryosuke said.

Mirai giggled as she saw Ryosuke's shadow stumbled across the bedroom. Ryosuke turned on the bathroom light.

"What?" Ryosuke said laughing a bit.

"My Ryo-chan is such a baka." Mirai said sweetly.

"Hey--!" Ryosuke's voice trailed away when he saw the change in Mirai's expression. She was looking at the floor.

Ryosuke walked towards her, his grin disappearing. His face turned to rock as his attention was drawn to the shattered window in their bedroom.

Ryosuke kneeled down and inspected it. A lamp lied broken on the ground by the window.

"Whoever it is, is still in the house." Mirai said softly, worried.

And then suddenly there was a sound. Both looked at the bathroom, where the sound was coming from.

A shadow moved. Mirai screamed. Ryosuke moved in front of her.

They stared at the bathroom doorway. Someone is inside.

Ryosuke moved forward.

"Ryosuke~!" Mirai called but Ryosuke silenced her.

He moved forward. He could see clothes on the bathroom floor. And as he moved forward, he could finally see. There was a man. A young man, in his early twenties or younger. He was naked, he was thin, his eyes were bulging.

"Mirai, don't move. Don't say a word." Ryosuke said.

He faced the stranger and said, "This is forty-seven Nakamura Street. You have broken a window and entered a private residence. Do you understand what I'm saying?"

The stranger slowly looked up for the first time.

"You don't know so many things." He said.

Ryosuke didn't know how to respond.

"Are you drunk?" The stranger spoke once more and his stare slided to Mirai. "Did you get him drunk?"

The stranger gazed at Mirai. Gazed directly into her eyes. A penetrating, unwavering stare.

He faced Ryosuke once more.

"Do you know why you're scared when you're alone?" The stranger said. "I know."

The room went silent.

"What do you want? I don't understand what you want." Ryosuke said.

The stranger glared at Ryosuke.

"What you promised." he said.

They were silent for a while.

"Do I know you?" Ryosuke asked.

"Let's all celebrate, Dr. Yamada. Recipient of awards from the Mayor on the news. Dr. Yamada, he's helped so many children... And he doesn't even remember my name?" The stranger said in mock cheer.

Ryosuke couldn't speak.

The stranger gave a dry laugh. "I was ten when you worked with me."

Ryosuke's intelligent eyes raced for answers.

"Downtown clinic? Single parent family? I had a possible mood disorder... I had no friends... you said I was socially isolated. I was afraid -- you called it acute anxiety... You were wrong. Come on, clear your head... Male, nine... Single parent... Mood disorder... Acute anxiety. " The stranger said.

Ryosuke stayed silent, thinking fast.

"I'm nineteen. I have drugs in my system twenty-four hours a day... I still have no friends. I still have no peace. I'm still afraid." Tears jumped into the stranger's eyes.

"...I'm still afraid." The stranger whispered.

"Please give me a second to think." Ryosuke said as he stared at the stranger.

"Kuramoto Kaoru?" Ryosuke said.

"Some people call me freak." The stranger continued.

"Marius Yo?"

Tears fell down the stranger's face. "I am a freak."

Ryosuke looked up at the sound of those words.

"Shintaro?"

The room went quiet again.

"Morimoto Shintaro?"

Morimoto Shintaro stared with surprise through his tears.

Ryosuke let out a deep breath like he just emerged from deep waters. "I do remember you, Shintaro. You were a good kid. Very smart... Quiet... Compassionate... Unusually compassionate..."

Shintaro is fully crying now. "You failed me."

"Shintaro... I'm sorry I didn't help you... I can try to help you now." Ryosuke whispered.

Shintaro turned to the sink. His hand went in. He took something. He turned around and raised a gun at Ryosuke. A violent, ear-shattering echo could be heard as not waiting for even a second, he fired.

Ryosuke clutched his stomach and folded like a rag doll onto the bed. Shintaro instantly moved the gun to his own head as another horrific blast spiked the air.

Shintaro crumpled onto the bathroom floor as Mirai's chilling screams filled their home.
