Chapter 8
It had been two days since what happened.
It was as if Ryosuke woke up from a dream. He hadn't heard from Mirai since then. Ryosuke wasn't even sure if Mirai really happened.
It was really frustrating. It was as if he was being haunted by images of Mirai.
He sighed as he sat alone on a bus.
He looked out and sighed once more. He had seen the reflection of the bus on one of the buildings' windows.
The whole back of the bus he had gotten on was taken up with a huge picture of Mirai.
-
"Tadaima." Ryosuke had called out when he reached his home.
"Okaeri.." He heard Ryuu say.
He found Ryuu in their living room watching the TV.
---
Space Mirai, in the very hi-tech environment and a serious mood, fastens the last clasps on her uniform. She takes a helmet type thing, and places it on her head.
---
So he was tormenting himself. But Ryosuke really couldn't help it.
Mirai's space movie seemed interesting as well so he had joined Ryuu on the sofa.
Ryuu was looking at him worriedly but he didn't notice.
Still, he continued to stare at Space-Mirai in their TV.
Suddenly, Ryuu poked him.
He just looked at him.
"Okay, Ryosuke, you've been like this for how many days now. What happened?" Ryuu said.
Ryosuke, still, just stared at him with no visible expression on his face.
"Come on. Open up. This is me, Ryuu-chan. I'm in contact with some quite important spiritual vibrations. What's wrong?" He said uncharacteristically.
Ryosuke continued to stare for a while.
"Well, okay." Ryosuke finally said, deciding he'd better speak or Ryuu wouldn't stop bothering him. "There's this girl..."
"Aha!" Ryuu said pointing at him. "I'd been getting a female vibe. Good. Speak on, dear friend."
Another look and Ryosuke continued.
"She's someone I just can't..." He sighed. "someone who... self-evidently can't be mine... and it's as if I've taken love-heroin... and now I can't even have it again. I've opened Pandora's box. And there's trouble inside." He mumbled.
Ryuu nodded thoughtfully.
"Yeah." Ryuu said seriously. "Yeah... tricky... tricky... I knew a girl at school called Pandora.. never got to see her box though."
Ryosuke laughed. The first time in two days.
Ryutaro smiled.
"Thanks." Ryosuke said.
That night Ryosuke decided to take Ryuu with him to Inoo's restaurant. His friends had invited him for a get-together.
When they arrived, his friends were already there.
It was only them and another group of customers inside the place.
Ryosuke sat between Keito and Umika. Ryuu sat on the last vacant seat besides Yuuka-chan.
Ryuu, feeling a bit out of place and Ryosuke, feeling depressed, quietly ate while everyone chatted.
They were on their first course when Ryosuke noticed it.
Keito was reading "Evening Standard," and on the cover of it was a picture of Mirai and Ryuusei at Narita Airport.
Ryosuke tried to ignore this.
He turned to his sister, about to start any topic but he had found her busy playing with little Yuuka-chan at the end of the table.
He turned to Ryuu but he was busy watching the two girls in front of him play.
He was about to turn to Yuto when Chinen spoke.
"You didn't know she had a boyfriend?" He asked. It seems he had noticed Ryosuke's fumbling.
"No..." Ryosuke said, a bit surprised. "did you?"
Everyone looked at him. Obviously everyone knew.
"Jeez, I can't believe it... my whole life ruined because I don't read 'JUNON' magazine." Ryosuke said.
Yuto mock-punched him. "I couldn't believe it when I first heard from Chii that you went with her."
"Let's face facts. This was always a no-go situation. Mirai's a goddess and you know what happens to mortals who get involved with the gods." Chinen said.
"Died?" Ryosuke said.
"Every time." Keito said, agreeing.
"Don't despair..." Ryuu piped. "I think I have the solution to your problems."
Everyone looked at him.
"Really?" Ryosuke asked.
He shrugged. "Her name is Airi and she works in the contracts department. She's very pretty and is apparently looking for a boyfriend."
Kanon raised a brow on him.
Ryuu shrugged again. "My little brother's girlfriend works there as well. She tried to set me up with her."
---
Ryosuke was all but forced to go with Ryuu's plan. He didn't even want to but with all his friends plus his sister's scheming, he was no match.
And so to the date he went.
And right after that, a regroup at Chinen's house.
"Well?" Chinen asked once he'd sat on their couch.
Ryosuke sighed. Jeez, his friends are really meddlesome.
"She's perfect, perfect." Ryosuke said. It was true.
"And?" Yuto urged.
Ryosuke made a gentle, exasperated gesture, then...
"I think you have forgotten..." Ryosuke started and then he looked at them. "...what an unusual situation you have here. To find someone you actually love, who'll love you... the chances are... always miniscule. Look at me... not counting the goddess, as you put it... I've only loved two girls in my whole life, both total disasters." He said.
"That's not fair." Umika said.
"No really, one of them go out with me and then leaves me quicker than you can say Kinki Kids and the other, who seriously ought to have known better, casually marries my best friend."
There was a pause and then everyone looked at Suzuka.
"Still loves you though." She just said.
"In a depressingly asexual way." Ryosuke said.
There was another pause and then,
"I never fancied you much actually..." Suzuka said.
Everyone all roared with laughter.
"Suzu-chan, mou..." Yuto said taking pity on his best friend.
"I mean I loved you... you were terribly funny." Suzuka continued. "But... well..." She trailed off.
"Oh no... this is just getting worse. I am going to find myself, 30 years from now, still on this couch." Ryosuke said.
"Do you want to stay?" Umika, who was sitting besides him, asked.
"Why not..." Ryosuke said. Honestly, he felt like he couldn't go anywhere anyway right now.
Umika turned to Suzuka. "Do you guys wanna stay as well? Yuuka-chan is already asleep..."
"Can't." Yuto said. "Yuuka have school tomorrow."
-
After a little while the Nakajimas went on their way. Ryosuke didn't really move from his place, though. Neither did Umika, but that was because of her injury.
Chinen had brought Ryosuke blankets and pillow and had even offered to accompany him but Ryosuke refused. He felt he needed to be alone to think.
Later, Chinen had lifted Umika off their couch and carried her upstairs, both saying their good nights to Ryosuke.
An hour had already passed since then but still, Ryosuke was just sitting down the couch, just thinking.
Ryosuke didn't really felt he slept but when dawn came he had sat up and arranged their couch.
Chinen had went downstair then to check up on him.
He had told him they'd be leaving for work soon.
Ryosuke had smiled at him and said he'd be going home then.
A while later, Chinen came down once again now fully dressed and carrying Umika with him who was also dressed for work.
"Ryosuke, are you ready? We're leaving soon." Yuri said.
"Wait Yuri, I need to get my things. And I need to make a call." Umika said.
"Uhm, Umi-chan, I'm running a little late." Chinen said.
"You should get going, Chii." Ryosuke piped. "I'll drive Umika to her work."
Chii smiled at him. "Thanks Ryo." He said as he tossed him his car keys.
"I'll get you after work." Chii promised Umika.
Umika just nodded. She kissed him goodbye.
Ryosuke couldn't help but smile at the scene. It was a beautiful sight, but still, unwillingly, he was feeling a bit resentful.
Ryosuke waited for Umika to finished her business and then he carried her to their car and her wheelchair.
Then they were off.
After sending Umika to her work, Ryosuke decided to just go home. Yuto could manage a day without him, he thinks.
Ryosuke walked past the newsagent, heading for home. There was a rack of tabloid papers.
Ryosuke didn't notice this but all of the papers seem to have very grainy, grabbed pictures of Mirai on their front page.
About ten minutes later, Ryosuke reached his home.
Ryuu wasn't there. Probably in his university or something. It wasn't obvious but it was true, Ryuu was a university student and he'd rented a room in his house for that.
He decided to take a shower and change. He hadn't changed since his date.
-
Ryosuke was shaving when the doorbell rang.
'Ah. I forgot to tell Yuto I won't be coming to work. Might be worried.' Yuto had always been a worrywart since they were kids.
The bell kept ringing.
"Coming!" Ryosuke called out as he headed downstairs.
He opened the door only to close it again.
Slowly, he opened it again.
Surely, Shida Mirai was in his front porch wearing a long trench coat and dark glasses.
"Right." Mirai said.
"Sorry... it was... surreal." Ryosuke said.
"Can I come in?" Mirai said.
"Come in." Ryosuke said letting her in.
She moved inside.
And Ryosuke finally had a good look at her.
Her hair was a mess, her eyes were tired.
It wasn't anything like the 'Shida Mirai'.
Mirai went straight to his living room and sat on the couch.
She looked exhausted.
Ryosuke sat next to her. He was now really really confused.
He was sure something happened, but what?
Suddenly Mirai took something from her bag.
It was a newspaper. In there was pictures of her wearing only a bikini.
"They were taken years ago..." She started saying. "I know it was... well, I was poor and it happens a lot... that's not an excuse. But to make things worse, it now appears someone was filming me as well. So what was a stupid photoshoot now looks like a porno film." She said, sighing.
Mirai looked young in those pictures. Around 16 or so.
"And well... the pictures have been solid and they're everywhere." Mirai said.
Ryosuke shook his head in disapproval, looking at the news article.
"I don't know where to go. The hotel is surrounded." Mirai continued.
"This is the place." Ryosuke said.
"Thank you. I was supposed to back in Tokyo now but it's the worse place to be." She said. She was very shaken.
"These are such horrible pictures. They're so grainy... they make me look like..."
"A bath would be great." Mirai said, smiling for the first time.
Thanks for reading!
